Abstract
This study was conducted in 1995 as a benchmark before CT scanning has been included in the benefit package of health insurance in Korea.
@ES The objectives of the study are two-fold:
@EN 1) to identify the status of CT installations and the customary charges of CT scanning nationwide 2) to analyse the factors affecting the cost variation in scanning CT.
Authors investigated 572 medical facilities installed with CT scanner, which consisted of 37 tertiary hospitals, 315 general hospitals, 190 small & medium-size hospitals and 130 private practitioner's offices. A Multiple regression analyses was
done
with 14 independent variables.
@ES Major findings of the study were summarized as follows:
@EN 1) The average charge for whole body CT scanning with or without contrast media amounted to £Ü222,612 and £Ü177,163 respectively. And that for brain CT scanning amounted to £Ü196,154 and £Ü156,413 respectively.
2) The cost variation was bigger in whole body CT scanning than brain CT scanning. The coefficient of variance was 15.7 for whole body CT scanning and 12.6 for brain CT scanning.
3) Cost variation of CT scanning was also noted for by area. For instance, the whole body CT with contrast media was charged £Ü198,736 in Cheju.
4) Three potent predictors were the number of beds, geographical area and the purchasing CT scanner. The above three predictors explained 37.3 percent of variance of CT scanning charges. However, further studies are needed for identifying
factors
affecting cost variations in cost sharing under the coverage of health insurance benefit.
